It does something very strange on linux:

# ps -afx
...
10063 2 S 0:00 nxterm -T localhost
10064 p2 S 0:00 \_ -csh
10585 p2 S 0:00 \_ strace -p 10563
10563 ? S 0:00 \_ httpd
10564 ? S 0:00 \_ httpd
10565 ? S 0:00 \_ httpd
10566 ? S 0:00 \_ httpd
10567 ? S 0:00 \_ httpd
10568 ? S 0:00 \_ httpd
10569 ? S 0:00 \_ httpd
10570 ? S 0:00 \_ httpd
10571 ? S 0:00 \_ httpd
10572 ? S 0:00 \_ httpd
10573 ? S 0:00 \_ httpd

# kill -INT 10563

this doesn't do anything... strace just does the same thing.

# kill -HUP 10563

This does restart the main server...

# kill 10563

This kills the main process only the rest become zombie processes.

This happens only if you do the above in that order...
