For techniques applicable to obtaining these sorts of performance improvements,
see Andrew Appel's paper on Intensional Equality for Continuations, in the
April SIGPLAN notices (I think it's April; at any rate, it's the one that
came out around April 1).  This defines a new operator on continuations, which
are normally viewed as a concept mostly applicable to semantic models, and
research-flavored languages such as Scheme and some ML variants; however,
Appel shows the relevance of the continuation concept to C by demonstrating
dramatic performance improvements on some actual C code which operates on
its continuations, in particular making use of his intensional equality
operator, which he notates ';=)'.
