Uhh, Rob, haven't you bothered to learn cvs yet?

cvs is really good at this and you can bloody well learn how to use it
rather than make use create lots of tar files and do all the work for
you :-)

cvs co -D date

will give you a snapshot at any particular date so you can start at
some particular day and work your way through until you find the day
that the bad patch was added and then diff that against the previous day
to see what was done. You could in fact narrow it down to the exact commit
since "date" includes seconds :-)
