I used AC_REPLACE_FUNCS to check for them.  If the function (eg
strcasecmp) is not found, the appropriate object (eg "strcasecmp.o")
is added to LIBOBJS.  So I just moved these functions into their own

There are other ways to do this, but this one seemed most expedient to
me.  These files should be in the distribution.  Aren't they?

The stuff in support/ didn't look like it was really supported.  So I
didn't set it up to compile or install.  If it is supposed to work,
then this is fixable.

That is very easy to do.

Thanks for the ideas.  I'll implement them when I start hacking this
stuff again... could be soon, we'll see.
