  What's the main reason for needing a directory structure?

Most Unix kernels handle file lookup by linear search.  For
large directories, this has all the problems you'd expect it to
have.  The fix is to build a tree structure, and do the lookups
in that --- but since the kernel won't do it for you, you need
to do it yourself.
