Odd.  I find that +ak works well on 1.3.59, 1.3.69 and 1.3.70.  I
didn't try any between those on that box.

We get 300K +/- 50K hits per day, on a P100 w/ 64Mo, using yp and with
all of the pages on a NetApps NFS server.  The box is currently also
running 80+ low impact BindAddress'ed VHs.
