I think that the standard should also mandate that % escapes be used
to deal with 'special' characters (i.e. ", %, \0, and I'd say any
"non-printable", even though the definition of said depends on your
environ) in log fields.

There should be a Referer field, and a User Agent field.  Both can be
set to - if that information is not desirable.

P.S.  Is there a standards document describing CLF?  I couldn't find one.
