Absolutely! I've always thought httpd should be able to do something like

But are we not already there? Wouldn't
DirectoryIndex index.html index.cgi
Or even
DirectoryIndex index.html /cgi-bin/
Question: can DirectoryIndex be set in the .htaccess file?
