> Reporter has an LDAP server that allows anonymous searches but does not allow
> anonymous compares [rather it's configured that way]. So he leaves off the
> bind dn/password to retrieve the DN, but can't do certain types of authz
> anonymously.
>
> If I commit the patch, I will make the directive sound less general and put
> some time into the doc.

If there's a use-case, I'm +1

With reference to trunk, but I'm sure this applies also to 2.2 ...

A look at the code in question indicates that the use of r->pool causing the
issue is in function process_tags(), and could be fixed by a simple patch:

--- modules/metadata/mod_headers.c    (revision 888304)
+++ modules/metadata/mod_headers.c    (working copy)
@@ -551,6 +551,10 @@

     format_tag *tag = (format_tag*) hdr->ta->elts;

+    while (r->main != NULL) {
+        r = r->main;
+    }
+
     for (i = 0; i < hdr->ta->nelts; i++) {
         s = tag[i].func(r, tag[i].arg);
         if (str == NULL)

Does this make sense, or am I missing something? Haven't checked the
implications of passing the parent to tags[i].func, FWIW.

hi there

short update:

it seems to be a Tomcat problem/bug.

the EOF occource because of an TCP/RST.
so, apache thinks about an not accessable proxy target.

There are maybe two ways to "fix"

Best way is to find out why Tomcat close the connection (it does for just one
SYN! so there is not really a network issue)
so, the failure comes around 2 times per Day, this is realliy difficult to
diagnost.
Also the Debug Logs would not say anything about that.

I Will look forward to fix it like a dirty way.
maybe it is possible to define a max_retry value for mod_proxy to retry the
connection if a SYN/RST.

I have the same problem with an another application server (Glassfish). Because
it happens on a critical application I cannot wait long time for a patch. Are
there workarounds in order to avoid that error ?

https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=48359

           Summary: Buffer overflow related to setting RequestHeader
           Product: Apache httpd-2
           Version: 2.2.9
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: major
          Priority: P2
         Component: Core
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: phil.pickett@springsource.com

The background is that we use mod_headers to set request headers like this :
RequestHeader set X-MS-Unique-Id %{UNIQUE_ID}e env=!HAVE_X-MS-Unique-Id

[ the env=! part does not matter -- it does it even for statically configured
request headers ]

This works fine when Apache directly serves a request first time. It breaks
badly when Apache uses a subrequest during its processing. This is because
mod_headers sets the header (in r->headers_in) during the subrequest, using the
request pool from that subrequest.

Unfortunately, Apache passes subrequests a reference to r->headers_in, not a
copy. So at the end of the subrequest when the sub-request's pool is destroyed,
you have invalid data on the parent request's headers_in table.

The core apache code responsible for this is ap_set_sub_req_protocol() in
server/protocol.c :

/* did the original request have a body? (e.g. POST w/SSI tags)
* if so, make sure the subrequest doesn't inherit body headers
*/
if (apr_table_get(r->headers_in, "Content-Length")
|| apr_table_get(r->headers_in, "Transfer-Encoding")) {
clone_headers_no_body(rnew, r);
} else {
/* no body (common case). clone headers the cheap way */
rnew->headers_in = r->headers_in;
}

Unfortunately, the 'cheap way' allows subrequests to modify the parent
request's data structures. We fixed the problem by changing this to :

else {
/* no body (common case). clone headers the cheap way */
/* rnew->headers_in = r->headers_in; */
rnew->headers_in = apr_table_copy(rnew->pool, r->headers_in);
}

There is a performance penalty with this. One other solution would be to modify
mod_headers to set the table value using the table's own pool rather than its
request pool, but that doesn't prevent subrequests can having potentially
strange side-effects.

This bug has potentially serious security consequences as the main request ends
up referencing memory it shouldn't be doing. We have seen it give away security
sensitive data to the client, and would like to see this patched and a security
fix made available as soon as possible please.

You want a new API in some future httpd release that provides more extensive
capabilities than ap_custom_response(). I suggest discussing this on the dev
mailing list (http://httpd.apache.org/lists.html#http-dev).

void ap_custom_response (request_rec *r, int status, char *string);

If we need to creat a custome respons with some binary data (for example gif
file) then in that case the third arguement should take the binary stream. But
this is not taking the binary data as third arguement and hence end web client
(browser) is not showing the binary data.

Moreover, content type is always Text/html and content length is seeting wiht
incorrect value

Patch to magic file

Experimentation with mod_mime_magic revealed it does not detect some important
MIME types, including PNG and SWF. After adding several extra lines to the
default docs/conf/magic, this was rectified.

I have opted to share these additions, as it appears the default conf/magic
file that ships with httpd-2 has not been updated in approximately five years.

        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal

         Component: Core
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: fgaliegue@gmail.com

If we take this sample:

RedirectMatch permanent ^/foo/?$
http://some.external.site/?var1=val1&var2=val2&var3=val3

and the URL entered is:

http://first.site/foo/

the redirect is to:

http://some.external.site/?var1=val1/foo/var2=val2/foo/var3=val3

Therefore, the & has extended to the whole text matched by the "left" regex,
just like it does with "classic dialect" regex engines such as sed and vi.
The same behavior has been observed with SetEnvIf and RewrireRule. Probably
other modules are affected as well.

This comes as quite a surprise given that Apache uses PCRE. I'd have expected
$& to work, but not a plain ampersand.

This is true of Apache 2.0.54 and also 2.2.9, installed by default on
Centos/RHEL 4.x and 5.x respectively. But this also holds true for the Apache
2.2.x coming with the latest Debian (I don't remember the exact version) and
Apache 2.2.14 on Gentoo.

For coherency, I'd say that $& should replace & for this purpose, to be more
inline with perl's regexes. But then it seems that Apache has behaved this way
for quite a while (since 2.0.x times at least, I don't know for 1.3) and this
change could break some setups...

Yeah, I rather expected that response, and I don't entirely disagree. I wonder
if a subset of RewriteMap - like only txt: or perhaps txt:, dbm: and rnd: -
could be an acceptable compromise. Of course, that would no doubt be more
difficult to do.

My gut reaction is a resounding WONTFIX: rewritemap is only implemented to run
early, and running it in a directory context would be rather a lot more work.
And since rewritemap may run nonstandard code (including in-process code),
there are big security issues to consider if it's permitted to .htaccess users.

RewriteMap is not permitted in a .htaccess file. I presume there are good
reasons for this. However, it would be amazingly convenient if it were
permitted. Can we consider the implications of doing so, and, if it's not
terrible, permit it, perhaps with an associated configuration directive for the
server administrator to enable/disable this feature?

> I'm wondering what we're accomplishing by doing the authorization with the

> during the authentication phase, and your patch still requires authentication
> to be provided by mod_authnz_ldap (to cache the password for the authorization
> bind), so what are we gaining by binding as the user only in the latter phase?
>

Reporter has an LDAP server that allows anonymous searches but does not allow
anonymous compares [rather it's configured that way]. So he leaves off the
bind dn/password to retrieve the DN, but can't do certain types of authz
anonymously.

If I commit the patch, I will make the directive sound less general and put
some time into the doc.

> the proposed patch
> I'm proposing a patch to use the username and password entered by the user in
> the compare phase.
> It does something similar to #43792, but differently:
> - it uses the dn retreived from server, instead of appending a suffix to
> username
> - it saves the password in authn_ldap_request_t, as long as needed then wipes
> it
> It adds a new configuration flag: AuthLDAPBindAsUser
> The flag defaults to off, when set to 'on' enable the bind as user behaviour
> The patch is against 2.2.14.

I'm wondering what we're accomplishing by doing the authorization with the
bound user? We're already using the config-supplied DN and password to bind
during the authentication phase, and your patch still requires authentication
to be provided by mod_authnz_ldap (to cache the password for the authorization
bind), so what are we gaining by binding as the user only in the latter phase?

It's a bit confusing as at first read, I'd assumed that you were talking about
the authentication bind, which would have made more sense, albeit would need to
be documented as being as potentially dangerous as HTTP basic auth over the
network (although this refers to the backend network), unless a secure
connection to the LDAP server was used.

> Disabling keepalive unconditionally for all requests which include Expect:
> 100-continue is overkill. I think it would be sufficient to fix this bug to
> disable keepalive when sending a final response, if the client has sent
> "Expect: 100-continue", and no 1xx interim response has already been sent.
>
> RFC 2616 lists that as a "MAY" if I interpret section 8.2.3 correctly.

Joe, is that a reservation about the patch? It will disable keepalive if and
only if we sent a non-100 response when the client was expecting 100. That's
an errordocument (or some app that can't deal with 100 and should therefore
presumably force HTTP/1.0). Seems right to me.

> Nick, the patch is working for me. I applied it to the httpd-2.2.14 sources and
> re-ran my .NET Framework test code that combines PROPFIND, digest
> authentication, and 100-continue. Before the patch, the test would fail if the
> PROPFIND contained a body. After the patch, the PROPFIND succeeds both with and
> without a body. It's a very limited test, but so far, so good.
>
> Thanks for working on this.

Thanks for the comment - just noticed it when I marked another bug a duplicate
of this.

Bug me if I don't revisit the patch in the next week or two, given your
confirmation.

Comment 2 describes PR 47087. Are you in a position to test-drive that patch?

This report is a dup of one of two errors. The spaces do not cause a problem.

The ()'s are a syntax error in the context of some directives (shm mutex for
example), while international characters also cause problems (need to be
converted to utf-8, a missing feature in the installer/conf rewriter).

Marking invalid as both bugs are already open.

This particular crash (trying to dereference ctx->procnode when NULL) was
introduced a few weeks ago, after the release of mod_fcgid-2.3.4. It is now
fixed in r887923.

http://svn.apache.org/viewvc?diff_format=h&view=revision&revision=887923

It wouldn't explain crashes with older levels of mod_fcgid. Please re-open
this PR if you still get a crash right around the same place after applying the
update, or open a new PR if you get a different problem symptom. Thanks!

We use uid as usernames for the authentication (search phase).
Then I use the user dn fetched this way - and not the username - for
authorization (compare phase).

This is very similar to setting the directive 'AuthLDAPBindDN', but
dinamically, so no munging is necessary.

Btw, we use lotus notes' ldap.

           Summary: Long names in Windows 7 64Bit causes conf file syntax
                    errors
           Product: Apache httpd-2
           Version: 2.2.14
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Windows Vista
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: Win32 MSI Installer
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: tamalero@gmail.com

When installing Apache 2.2.14 on its default options & directory ( installing
on C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Apache 2.2\ )
creates a problem that will report errors in conf file.
Error type: Syntax Error
usually in the first parts ( domain, admin email )
no modification of the conf file will make the file work until you've changed
the default installation directory.

To fix the problem:

changing the directory to a shorter filename with no spaces:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache\Apache2.2
makes the problem away and conf file will then report NO ERRORS.

> Even though it has been happening for a long time, you're using the recent
> mod_fcgid 2.3.4 or later level from svn, right?

Yes - sorry, I should clarify. The "spasms" started a long time ago but I only
recently noticed crashes. I was using the latest copy from svn, but I've now
downgraded to mod_fcgid-2.2 to try and bisect.

> By chance do you have FCGIWrapper/FcgidWrapper defined in any .htaccess files?
> (That code currently isn't thread-safe.)

Nope.

> Have you checked other cores to see if the backtrace is the same?

They all look the same.

--- Comment #1 from Jeff Trawick <trawick@apache.org> 2009-12-06 15:05:28 UTC ---
Even though it has been happening for a long time, you're using the recent
mod_fcgid 2.3.4 or later level from svn, right?

By chance do you have FCGIWrapper/FcgidWrapper defined in any .htaccess files?
(That code currently isn't thread-safe.)

Have you checked other cores to see if the backtrace is the same?

           Summary: Frequent crashes with high load
           Product: Apache httpd-2
           Version: 2.3-HEAD
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: mod_fcgid
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: dvander@alliedmods.net

Every few hours mod_fcgid suddenly tries spawning tons and tons of processes
and our web server (no - the entire box) becomes unresponsive. This seems to
have been happening for around a year.

After one of these spasms it starts crashing Apache. For example:

(gdb) bt

#6  0x00007f5749a625ad in clone () from /lib/libc.so.6
#7  0x0000000000000000 in ?? ()
(gdb) p *ctx
$1 = {ipc = {connect_timeout = 3, communation_timeout = 60, ipc_handle_info =
0x0, request = 0x12f7378}, buffer = 0x0, procnode = 0x0, active_time = 0,
  has_error = 0}
(gdb) f 0
#0  0x00007f5745f91da8 in bucket_ctx_cleanup (thectx=<value optimized out>) at
fcgid_bridge.c:174
174         ++ctx->procnode->requests_handled;
(gdb) p ctx.procnode
$2 = (fcgid_procnode *) 0x0

If there's anything I can do to help diagnose this please let me know. I'm
going through old versions of mod_fcgid to find a regression range.
