Subject DO NOT REPLY [Bug 50609] New: mod_cache + mod_passenger "Apache stopped forwarding the backend's response" error on revalidating cache entry

https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=50609

           Summary: mod_cache + mod_passenger "Apache stopped forwarding
the backend's response" error on revalidating cache
                    entry
           Product: Apache httpd-2
           Version: 2.2.17
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: mod_cache
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: chrismay50@gmail.com

When using mod_cache in front of mod_passenger (http://www.modrails.com/), if a
request is made for a URL which exists in the cache, but which has expired,
then a conditional GET request is made via mod_passenger to the rails
application. If rails responds with a HTTP 304 status code, then passenger
emits the following error:

"Apache stopped forwarding the backend's response, even though the HTTP client
did not close the connection. Is this an Apache bug?"

mod_cache continues, and serves the cached content correctly, so there is no
user-visible impact, but the error message is worrying.

Is anyone able to ascertain whether this is a bug in passenger, or in
mod_cache, or something else?
