Subject DO NOT REPLY [Bug 39079] thread eats 100% CPU, presumably spinning in futex

I found bug 36324, and the 
        if (c == c->next
            || (c->next && c == c->next->next)
            || (c->next && c->next->next && c == c->next->next->next))
{
            abort();
        }
part of the code seems to be added for that bug, but I think that maybe not
enough...
What if we add a counter to the loop, and if the length of the loop reaches 1
millon, then just abort()?
