I'm encouraged by the recent activity on this bug, but with all the discussion
about possible approaches and their potential ramifications, and the link to
the reference describing version 1.2 and later behavior, I'm left wondering:
isn't there a set of unit test cases for this function to unequivocally define
its requirements, and indicate when an acceptable solution has been found? This
seems like a project that would have a large, if not exhaustive, stable of test
cases built up by now.
