The only benefit of using patched mod_connect is that you get client's real IP
address. So your filtering rules, log files operate on real IPs. 

Simply use stunnel at other end. 

[Browser] <=> [Stunnel client] <=> {INTERNET} <=> [Stunnel server] <=>
[Apache
mod_proxy] 

I've been using this flawlessly for a long time with only problem that every
request has 127.0.0.1 as client IP.
