Some additional thoughts / questions:

1. I assume 10GB is the amount of memory consumed by all child processes.
2. Please provide the following config settings:

    StartServers          
    MaxClients          
    MinSpareThreads      
    MaxSpareThreads      
    ThreadsPerChild      
    MaxRequestsPerChild  

3. Please provide the number of processes that are consuming the 10GB.
4. Please provide the output of
   ulimit -a
5. Please provide the output of pmap for one of the httpd child processes.
