As we use perl-based server-administration-scripts, 
we rely on the values given in the SERVER_NAME and
we do not want the user to play tricks on the 
content of this variable by sending cheated hostnames.
So we want UseCanonicalName set On.
Anyway thank you for the hint and background information.

And even more thank you for your helpful and speedy response.

(Apache is superb software, we use it for our central university website
 and a hundred more websites of departments and projects. 
 As well, thank you for this great piece of software...)
