Summary: apache 2.2.4 and mod_rewrite consumes gigs of mem
           Product: Apache httpd-2
           Version: 2.2.4
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: other
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: mod_rewrite
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: henka@cityweb.co.za

Hello,

Apologies if this is not a bug, or already noted elsewhere. I searched around
but found no mention of it.

Using apache 1.3.x or 2.0.x the following rewrite presents no problems:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI}\?%{QUERY_STRING}
\&quot|awstats|xmlrpc|chmod|wget|echo|lynx|rsync [NC]
RewriteRule ^.* /log/index.php [NC,L]
#
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.abc\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://abc.com$1 [R=301,L]
#
#
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.sabc\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://abc.com$1 [R=301,L]
#
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^sabc\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://abc.com$1 [R=301,L]

However, with apache 2.2.3 and 2.2.4, the httpd process seems to go into an
endless loop consuming more and more memory (3GB+ within a few seconds) very
rapidly.

Using RewriteLog I can see that if one of the conditions are met, things work
fine. If NONE of the conditions are met (and it does a "pass through"), then
things go to neverland.

Disabling mod_rewrite naturally makes the problem go away.
