Please do the following:

gdb /usr/sbin/httpd
run -X -d /etc/httpd -E /tmp/error.log

Do NOT set a breakpoint. If httpd crashes the gdb prompt will return and you can
do a 

thread apply all bt full

to let us know where the crash happened.
If it just exits 'normally' (gdb prompt also returns in this case) then there
should be either something in the error log (especially when loglevel is set to
debug, which you should do) and/or in /tmp/error.log. Please let me know the
contents of /tmp/error.log.
