I replaced the referenced RewriteRule with:

ProxyPass / http://127.0.0.1:8003/

(This is on a devel server using a different port, but I've verified the
original behavior is the same), and it doesn't appear to make any difference -
the data is still truncated when it's passed on to the backend server.
