Thanks Jeff.

I couldn't really convince myself what the correct behaviour was when I looked
at this before.  If there is a 404 response which suffers from an SSL-layer
error, why is it better to log a 500 than a 404; i.e. is it better to just log
r->status in the non-success case?  The real response code might be a useful
diagnostic.
