Joe: what does a reverse proxy situation have to do with this bug?

Yes, they might be witnessing a problem in the same piece of code ... but
perhaps not.  And frankly, I can understand why a problem in the reverse proxy
would be ignored.  But a major problem in the very basic, simple, core thing
that Apache is supposed to do should get attention.
