1) The comments in the original code specifically state that it is doing things
the wrong way, and the way the patch does it is more or less the suggested fix
from the old comments.

2) Just as a use-case, I am actually using the CONNECT method to tunnel an
unencrypted protocol (don't ask) and taking advantage of the SSL handling in
apache to add security and authentication to an otherwise completely unsecured
connection. I know this isn't the original intended use of CONNECT, but it seems
to me to be a valid usage.
