Really, nobody should ever be doing this.  I'd leave this bug open because the
patches are a reasonable cleanup and/or the error handling is bad, not because
the bug has a reasonable motivation.

CONNECT is defined to allow tunneling an SSL connection through a proxy.  You do
not connect to a proxy via SSL, *then* send a CONNECT request.  It's
non-sensical and it's behaviour not specified by any RFC.
