Your proposed code;

    do {
        rc = WaitForSingleObject(mutex, INFINITE);
    } while (rc == WAIT_ABANDONED);

looks like an infinte loop waiting to happen.

Would returing APR_EAGAIN on WAIT_ABANDONED map appropriately to the condition?
