Summary: Build fails when source tree is read-only
           Product: Apache httpd-2.0
           Version: 2.0-HEAD
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: Build
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: oldwolf@inspire.net.nz

Note: this is a bug in 2.0.55 but that option wasn't available on the bugzilla form.

I usually build projects with the source as read-only, and use a separate
directory for building. But httpd 2.0.55 tries to create a file in the source
tree . The error message output by 'make' was:
    /bin/sh: line 1: /var/src/httpd-2.0.55/srclib/pcre/chartables.c: No such
file or directory

Before that it had just done a large command with redirection to chartables.c .

My configure line was:
    ../../src/httpd-2.0.55/configure --enable-so --enable-deflate --enable-ssl
--enable-speling --enable-rewrite

I could work around the problem by setting srclib/pcre in the source tree to be
writable by the user doing the building.
