Maybe my example was bad.  The symlink exists in
/usr/local/www/data/<symlinkname>, which POINTS to
/usr/local/shares/<somedirectory>.   That is semantically correct, as far as I
can tell.  Again, this same config works fine on my 1.3.x installation.
