Summary: long freeze when doing Digest: generating secret for
                    digest authentication ...
           Product: Apache httpd-2.0
           Version: 2.0.54
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: mod_auth_digest
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: floeff@arcor.de

I run Apache 2.0.54 compiled by myself on a Debian 3.1 woody system, with a
self-compiled kernel. I experience a long freeze when doing "Digest: generating
secret for digest authentication ..."

Removing the line

LoadModule auth_digest_module modules/mod_auth_digest.so

cures the problem. The log file entry reads

[Fri Sep 02 18:18:39 2005] [notice] Digest: generating secret for digest
authentication ...

which could take some minutes, then Apache works flawlessly.

I saw a lot of occurences of this problem, but no real solution. My Apache is
compiled with

./configure --enable-mods-shared=all --enable-ssl --enable-proxy --enable-suexec
--with-suexec-caller=nobody --with-suexec-docroot=/home

and the kernel is 2.6.13, but 2.6.11 had problems as well. Let me know what else
you need (kernel .config?) to debug this, I am willing to help. :-)
