That's because you are seeing documented and expected behavior.  See the big box
stating "Main host goes away" on
http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/vhosts/name-based.html
plus the paragraph starting "Now when a request arrives..." further down the page.

As you've been told, the place for further discussion is the users list.
