I have a similar problem with 2.0.53.
I have gcc-3.2.3 and Linux Redhat 9.
I downloaded version 2.0.53 and I execute only the following statements :
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/http-2.0.53
make
and I have the following status :
make[2]: Entre dans le répertoire `/usr/local/httpd-2.0.53/server'
/usr/local/httpd-2.0.53/srclib/apr/libtool --silent --mode=compile gcc296 -g
