Removing the expat libraries that had been installed via fink, and using
--enable-ssl=static seems to correct or work-around the issue.

I'm going to mark this as INVALID, but if someone else thinks the problem was
something could be avoided in future, perhaps by changes to configure? they can
re-open it.


 That is,

httpd built and runs after doing:

  fink remove expat
  fink remove expat-shlibs

and using a config.nice containing:

#! /bin/sh
#
# Created by configure

"./configure" \
"--prefix=/usr/local/apache2" \
"--enable-rewrite=shared" \
"--enable-auth_digest=shared" \
"--enable-modules=access alias auth dir env include info log_config mime
negotiation setenvif status usertrack" \
