Summary: ErrorDocument 401 and REMOTE_USER logging
           Product: Apache httpd-2.0
           Version: 2.0.46
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: Core
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: mammal@vol.cz

There's a strange behavior in Apache 2.0 when logging user names used to log in
into protected areas of the server together with using ErrorDocument 401
directive.

We need to tell apart the initial 401 responses that trigger displaying of the
authorization box (empty username) and the actual log in attempt (i.e. some
username) in order to track the failed login attempts.

Without the ErrorDocument 401, the (possibly bogus) username is logged all
right. If case of ErrorDocument 401 "some text" it works as well, but if using
ErrorDocument 401 /somepage.html the username is always logged as a dash!

I think it does not make any sense and we currently need to work around this by
including the entire page into the apache config file.
