We have a similar problem with Apache 2.0.52 on AIX5.2. Apache 2.0.52 hangs on
different times. When Apache begins to give errors we get following errors on
the AIX system and restarting Apache do not solve the problem.

when apache hangs on, a core file is not created or we can not find any
segmentation fault line in error logs.
