Great, thanks Garrett.  Tweaked to:

1) use apr_file_write_full not apr_file_write and hence simplify the _flush function
2) return -1 rather than zero on malloc failure
3) simplify test case to use file_contents_equal (new as of yesterday :)

and applied to the trunk.
