I've had this problem on Windows since 2.0.49. I use the w32updatedb.pl script
to update apr-util to use Berkeley DB 4.2.52, and I get nearly the same error:

undefined reference to `_db_strerror'
undefined reference to `_db_create'

If I do not use the w32updatedb.pl script to link apr-util to BDB, it compiles,
but the goal is BDB support for mod_dav_svn (Subversion).

I was able to compile 2.0.49 against the same BDB libraries without error.

I'm using VC++.NET 2003 on Windows XP.
