The following two links suggest that people have been asking for 
this feature to be backported for a long time:

I am not a developer (I'm not even a programmer in general), so I
don't know why this hasn't been done. The second link above does
have a patch; while it is a patch against an older version of
Apache 1.3, it might still be useful.
