regarding the hang...

Apache on RHES 3.0 will (I think) use cross-process pthread mutexes for the
accept mutex.  This can cause hangs after child process crashes.  To verify that
your build is using cross-process pthread mutexes, see if "apachectl -V" displays

  -D APR_USE_PROC_PTHREAD_SERIALIZE

as part of the output.

Add "AcceptMutex sysvsem" to httpd.conf to work around this issue.

The original crash seems to be some openssl issue.
