The argumentation is interesting. In fact, mod_dir does only canonizialisation
work. (mod_autoindex relies on it).
Anyway, you'll get a valid resource, if you leave out mod_dir but include
mod_autoindex.

That we don't know how to deliver a resource doesn't make it invalid ;)

Anyway, something like

Options +FileMultiViews

or so would IMHO the best solution. (-> reopen)
