I have encountered the problem, and use the workaround below.

# Add / to directory requests.  This is normally done by mod_dir, but mod_dir
# drops the port from HTTP_HOST for some reason, which results in a redirect
# to the wrong port if port forwarding is in use.
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
RewriteRule ^/(.+)[^/]$ http://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}/ [R=301]
