  This is "by design".  Typical users won't be building from sources, while
  developers will.  Developers building Apache and testing their changes need
  these files to help debug the problems that ensue.  Developers who want 
  to later diagnose crash dumps must also archive these symbols to load them
  into the debugger with a crash dump.  Leave them, remove them or archive 
  them as appropriate to your case.

  This is similar to the Unix case, where Apache will not strip binaries of
  whatever level of debugging information which is compiled into the programs.
