Huge memory usage

When serving big files (> 150Mo) with PHP or cgi shell scripts, the child 
process memory size grows proportionnaly to the amount of data sent.

Config :
Linux RedHat 9.0, P200 with 256M
Apache is configured to use prefork MPM.
