Virtualdocumentroot acts at the same level like Alias (mod_rewrite also doesn't know about Alias ...). However, you can use the PT flag to pass the result to the next handler (alias, virtualdocumentroot, whatever). Appending the core documentroot is just an optimization step in order to save some CPU cycles.
