Can you run strace on your log program to see why it terminates?  Did Apache
kill it, did it get SIGPIPE, etc.?

If I understand your description, you can

  start Apache
  use ps to find pid of your log program
  strace -p LOG_PROGRAM_PID
  
then send a request to Apache from a browser

and the strace output will show what is happening to your log program.
