Parsing html with php not wanted

Summary: Parsing html with php not wanted
           Product: Apache httpd-1.3
           Version: 1.3.23
          Platform: Sun
               URL: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/~com119/phptest.htm
        OS/Version: Solaris
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: Blocker
          Priority: Other
         Component: Other mods
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: m.j.ovall@abdn.ac.uk

After a recent upgrade (very much required) from apache_1.2.5 to apache_1.3.23
and php3 to php4.2, we discovered that HTML pages with .htm and .html extensions
are now being parsed as php files (never happened before) and we would rather it
didn't.
Our current AddType entries in httpd.conf:
  AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
  AddType application/x-httpd-php .php3
  AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

Initial tests with php code included in a file with .htm extension resulted
in the file being parsed as php instead of returning the usual error
messages associated with this kind of scenerio. The url supplied is a
very small example of what is going on across our website.
No joy searching bugs.php.net; They say its an Apache problem. Although
I have found similar reported problems on the apache bug site, there were
no suitable solutions. Can you help? Thanks in advance.
