With apache 1.3.x, the config.layout used a syntax such as:
    datadir:       ${prefix}/share+
and the installation then created a subdirectory ${prefix}/share/<foo>, where
foo was some derived from a parameter (--target, which is no longer available
'cos of the switch to autoconf)

There are some notes in the comments at the top of the config.layout file itself.
