Um.. sorry to disappoint  

but we use cronolog quite happily on apache2 
and have been for the last 6-8 months.
My guess is that the process which is reading the other end of the pipe isn't
reading it fast enough, or has failed.
if you are using cronolog make sure it is actually running (via ps)
