It showed one -very- interesting thing, an empty URI.

The only way to get an empty URI is a file redirect (as opposed to
a uri redirect.)  I'll ponder this and throw you more questions later.

Any 'interesting' (non-standard) modules loaded?  Any interesting
things you've done in the corresponding <Location > or <Directory >
blocks, or the core config?
