%{REMOTE_USER} in mod_rewrite is NULL

           Summary: %{REMOTE_USER} in mod_rewrite is NULL
           Product: Apache httpd-2.0
           Version: 2.0.40
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: FreeBSD
            Status: NEW
          Severity: Normal
          Priority: Other
         Component: mod_rewrite
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: serg@odessa.net

Hi,
've found that in Apache 2.0.40 ( at least this version, don't have tested nay
other 2.x ) in mod_rewrite variable %{REMOTE_USER} have empty value. Debugging
src, found that in mod_rewrite.c, func do_expand(), value of r->user is a NULL
ptr; at the same time, REMOTE_HOST and othe vars are set to some value,
and also REMOTE_USER is correctly shown in logs and in PHP module ( in phpinfo()
func ).
I need to do a mapping on username. Mod_rewrite config used in virtualhost
context was:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteMap REDIRECT txt:/WWW/site2-members/public_html/pass/.redirected_users
RewriteCond ${REDIRECT:_0_%{REMOTE_USER}_1_%{HTTP_HOST}_2_%{REMOTE_HOST}} true

And what I've seen in rewrite log:

net.like - - [10/Sep/2002:18:08:17 +0300]
members.site2.org/sid#810f650][rid#818c050/initial] (5) map lookup FAILED:
map=REDIRECT[txt] key=_0__1_members.site2.org:8080_2_net.like

Note the "key" value where REMOTE_USER must be...but isn't

That's all the story. Is it a bug or a feature ? ;) This was working in Apache
1.3.x...
