It is probably a bug in the docs.  I wrote that example without testing it
(Bad Joshua!).  But I don't really know why it doesn't work, so I am hesitant
to rewrite that section.  Is it that gzip just won't compress in a stream like
that (it seems to work with cat file | gzip -c > file2.gz), or am I missing
something fundamental about piped logs?

Any help appreciated.
