See Bill's comments in bug 11778 -- it is a tradeoff.

Note that most times the MMN changes, it simply means a recompile.  You rarely
need to actually change the code of your module.   The developers are trying
to stabalize the 2.0 API, but they will not do so at the expense of important
features of fixes.
