I personally don't like to put editor-specific stuff into files. I use 
this in my ~/.emacs, instead:

(setq auto-mode-alist
        '(("\\.\\([pP]\\([Llm]\\|erl\\)\\|al\\|pod\\|t\\)\\'" . 

Gotta love lisp regexen, though, eh? ;-)
