[~thejas]Couldn't HIVE_HOME logic be simpler?  In pseudo code:

if(!isset(HIVE_HOME)) {
   set HIVE_HOME = DEFAULT_HIVE_HOME
else {
   //do nothing; just use this assuming the user set this intentionally
}
// may optionally check that HIVE_HOME/bin/hive exists
